Hotel San Anselmo

The calm and graceful Sant’Anselmo Hotel is tucked safely away from the chaos and roar of the city in a quiet residential area of villas and ambassadors’ residences on one of the most beautiful of Rome’s seven hills, the Aventine. You are a fifteen minute walk from the Circus Maximus and views across to the Palatine hills with the bold arches of Emperors’ palaces. This hotel is something of a rare find in a city like Rome. Central and yet dropped into the middle of what seems to be a quiet and sedate village of 19th century aristocratic villas.
Rome can be demanding, intoxicating, sometimes just a little too Rome and to have somewhere like the Sant’Anselmo to come back to provides the perfect antidote to the eternal city with its tables and chairs tucked into the garden and comfy sofas on the patio. A place to slow down and enjoy your capuccino before seeing a little Michelangelo or an "aperativo" to regain your legs and stimulate the taste-buds for dinner in Trastevere or, just 2 minutes away on foot, Testaccio, another hidden corner of Rome that, though central, has kept its inhabitants and culture, its pre-war pizzerias and one of the best markets in the whole of the city. This is one of the few remaining places that Romans, away from the tourist glare, can relax and do what they do best; enjoying themselves in that easy, playful game of life.
The hotel is essentially a large private villa with some 30 bedrooms and as with many Rome hotels these are not always on the large side but they are beautifully decorated with themes that hark back to the original Liberty period from when the villa was built. This blends with the use of warm coppery tones and plenty of sofas and hidden spaces to relax, take a pause, read a book. If you are looking for a base in Rome that is slightly calmer than the norm, somewhere you can be at home and not have to feel the pressures of being in a city centre whilst simultaneously being at its very green and residential heart then this may well be the ideal hotel for you. It offers a different way of seeing and tasting the city, miles away from the sterile and impersonal lodgings found near the Termini train station.
